This silent footage is one of the earliest films shot in Australia. It’s from the 1896 Melbourne Cup and shows that year’s winner, Newhaven, after the race with his trainer Walter Hickenbotham and jockey Harry Gardiner. The film was one of several shot by Marius Sestier, who travelled from France to Australia in 1896 to capture slices of local life for the Lumière brothers.
