AOL is finally pulling the plug on its dial-up Internet service. America Online's signature beeps, static sounds and screeches were the iconic way many people first accessed the internet in the 1990s. By the early 2000s, high-speed lines quickly replaced telephone lines. By 2023, dial-up made up about 1% of U.S. household internet subscriptions.
